SANDI DOTSON, CHAIRMAN
The purpose of the Allan A. C. Griffith, Sr. Education Department of the National United Church Ushers Association of America, Inc. (NUCUAA) is to encourage, inspire, and assist our youth in obtaining fuller and richer lives through the pursuit of higher education. From the small seed planted by Charlie H. Jones, the organizer and first National Chairperson, a mighty oak has grown.
Each year at the National Convention, the Education Department continues to sponsor the National Scholarship Contest in one of four fields of competition. Oration, Vocal, Essay, and Piano. In 2003, the Spelling Bee was added as a fifth field of competition, which began at the National Convention in 2005. The Contest each year adds another page to the history. A new category - STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) was introduced in 2024.The funds from which scholarships are now awarded began as the dream of our former President, R.E. Harshaw, Jr. Scholarships are awarded to Junior and Young People ’ s from the tenth grade through the freshman year of college. These scholarships are awarded through competition in five fields - Oration, Vocal, Essay, Instrumental, and STEAM.
